Twitter is adding more transparency to its enforcement actions regarding rule-breaking tweets. Users will now see labels on their tweets that they are violating platform rules, and will be able to submit feedback in the event of an unfair action by Twitter.
Elon Musk remains true to his word and continues to create a platform where free speech flourishes. Its slogan is Freedom of Speech, not Freedom of Reach, which now guides Twitter. This means that people on the platform can say whatever they want, however if it violates rules, the reach of the tweet will be reduced.
As promised, Musk is also working to give users access to information about actions taken against their accounts and tweets. This transparency will enable users to be informed and submit feedback about the actions of the platform if they do not agree with them. On Monday, the company explained in a blog post the principle of how it works.
Twitter explained that as a first step, Twitter users will soon start seeing labels on some tweets identified as potentially violating the platform’s rules around Hateful Conduct. By doing this, authors will be made aware that the visibility of their tweets is restricted by the platform. These actions will only be performed at the tweet level and will not affect the user account.
“Restricting the reach of Tweets helps reduce binary ‘leave up versus take down’ content moderation decisions and supports our freedom of speech vs freedom of reach approach,” the company explained.
Twitter acknowledges it can sometimes be wrong, so there will also be an opportunity for feedback. Authors will be able to submit feedback about the label if they believe the platform has incorrectly restricted the visibility of their content. Twitter has promised it will in the future allow creators to appeal decisions around tweet visibility. At the same time, the platform will continue to remove illegal content and suspend bad actors from Twitter.
