Twitter is starting to purge accounts that have had no activity for several years. This will release 1.5 billion Twitter handles. This may also lead to a decrease in the number of followers of some other accounts, Elon Musk warns.

Since taking over Twitter in October 2022, Elon Musk has continued to make various changes to the social network to enhance the user experience. In early December 2022, he announced the company would delete and free the names of 1.5 billion accounts that have been inactive for years on the platform. “Twitter will soon start freeing the name space of 1.5 billion accounts,” he wrote. “These are obvious account deletions with no tweets & no log in for years,” Musk added.

The problem is that during the existence of Twitter, a lot of interesting, fun, and cool names (Twitter handles) have been chosen by different users. Over time, some accounts became inactive for various reasons, but these cool handles remained tied to these accounts and could no longer be used by other users. Some users simply lost interest in the platform and never wanted to return again, while others could forget their data and lose access. Another category was accounts that were banned by Twitter and users could no longer use them. According to Musk, Twitter has a database of 1.5 billion accounts that have been inactive for several years, which is clearly a lot.

On Monday, Musk said Twitter had begun purging accounts that had not been active in years. While this will free up a huge number of different handles, there will be some other implications. These inactive accounts may be following other accounts that are still active on Twitter. Therefore, removing them could result in users seeing a drop in their followers, as Musk warned.
