Tesla has already attracted more than 20 of its Chinese suppliers to open their production facilities in Mexico, according to a report. They should start production there before the beginning of 2025. Producing in Mexico, Chinese suppliers have the opportunity to sell their products more expensively than in their homeland.

Tesla continues its development in Mexico. However, according to Chinese media LatePost (via TechNode), the construction of a new factory in Nuevo León will be completed half a year later than expected. Reportedly, this will allow production to begin in the first quarter of 2025. At the moment, the reasons for the delay are not disclosed.

Earlier, Tesla was reported to be urging its Chinese suppliers to also build manufacturing facilities in Mexico. It is said that the company asked to begin production on them before the beginning of 2025, that is, before the start of the production at Giga Mexico. If suppliers fail to start production by that time, they risk losing orders from Tesla’s American and Mexican factories.

According to incomplete statistics compiled by LatePost, more than 20 Chinese Tesla suppliers have already announced plans to build factories in Mexico or have already begun construction. Tesla reportedly did not provide them with additional assistance or guarantee orders.

One of the suppliers told LatePost that Tesla purchase prices in Mexico are 18-20% higher for long-term partners than in China. The supplier estimated that the manufacturing cost of manufacturing a component in Mexico will be 15% higher than in China. This means that opening a presence in Mexico would increase the companies’ gross margins by at least 3 percentage points.
