A Chinese court has cleared the name of Tesla, which was blamed for a November 2022 Model Y crash that left two people dead and three injured.
The terrible tragedy was promoted by a local social media influencer who claimed that the Model Y was faulty, leading to the accident. Tesla filed a lawsuit against him in an attempt to clear its name of false statements. A forensic examination determined that the crash was not caused by defects in the vehicle’s steering or braking system, a court document showed.
An influencer on Douyin—China’s version of Tiktok—has been ordered by a court to issue a public apology and pay Tesla RMB 30,000 ($4,100) in damages for defamation.
The news about the Model Y accident, which occurred in November 2022, quickly spread throughout the world due to its scale. The owner of the Model Y said that his car accelerated to a speed of 102 miles per hour (164 kilometers per hour). He also claimed that he was unable to stop it despite supposedly trying. Accelerating at such speeds led to collisions with other vehicles and pedestrians. The Model Y eventually came to a stop after colliding with buildings. The entire journey of the car was captured on surveillance cameras.
