Tesla Model Y has become the best-selling electric car in history, data shows. The electric vehicle has surpassed the previous leader, which is also a car produced by Tesla.
To date, Model Y is by far Tesla’s most successful vehicle. Sales data from various countries around the world shows that consumers prefer this model over any other available in the market for purchase. After the data collected for 2023 was published, CleanTechnica calculated the total number of cars sold. According to them, sometime in the fourth quarter of 2023, Model Y took the title of the best-selling electric car in history, overtaking its older sibling.
Model Y was already on the verge of hitting a record at the end of the third quarter but was unable to overcome the sales of Model 3, the previous leader by about 3,000 units. However, Model 3 sales rose from 2,165,187 units at the end of the third quarter of 2023 to 2,295,187 units at the end of the fourth quarter, while cumulative Model Y sales rose from 2,162,119 units at the end of the third quarter to 2,493,657 units at the end of the fourth quarter. Thus, with a lead of 198,470 units, Model Y took the lead and became the best-selling electric car in history.
It is worth keeping in mind that separate sales data for Model Y and Model 3 is not published by Tesla. However, sales data in various markets around the world usually indicates the models sold. Thus, the estimated number of units sold may differ from actual sales numbers, but not significantly.
The current trend indicates that Model Y will retain its leadership for a long time to come, with the number of registered vehicles increasing month by month in the foreseeable future. At the moment, there are no electric vehicles on the market that can overtake Model Y in terms of the number of cars sold. The only real competition would be another car made by Tesla.
At the moment, the company has begun production of Cybertruck, which has enormous potential. However, it most likely will not be able to outsell Model Y. Another, more realistic competitor, is Tesla’s new generation model, the production of which will probably not begin until 2025. Given that it will take several more years to sell millions of units once production begins, Model Y will likely hold its position until at least the end of the decade.
