SpaceX Starlink Provides Most Reliable Communication in Emergencies, Shown Again After Japan’s Earthquake

SpaceX Starlink is the most reliable means of communication in emergency situations. This fact was proven again after the earthquake in Japan when SpaceX and KDDI donated 350 Starlink units free of charge to evacuation centers on the Noto Peninsula, the epicenter of the disaster.

For several years now, Starlink has proven its reliability during the most difficult situations. While traditional communications fail when faced with unforeseen circumstances, Starlink continues to provide high-speed internet through satellite broadband.

The company once again proved its reliability by quickly responding to an emergency in Japan. On January 1, an earthquake was recorded on the Noto Peninsula. KDDI is partnering with Starlink Japan LLC, a Japanese subsidiary of SpaceX, to provide free Starlink satellite broadband to evacuation centers on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture.

On January 7, 2024, the two companies delivered 350 Starlink devices to the Ishikawa Prefectural Government Building. Starlink antennas are small and lightweight, making them easy to carry and quick to install to create a Wi-Fi environment. Because Starlink communications satellites are located in low Earth orbit at an altitude of 550 km, they provide high-speed internet access with low latency, which is critical in emergencies.

Starlink and KDDI will work with related organizations, including local governments and the Self-Defense Forces, to install Starlink in every evacuation center. This will allow people in evacuation centers and people involved in relief efforts to gather information during emergencies and contact related parties. In addition, KDDI separately uses Starlink for backhaul links for base stations installed on vehicles/portables/ships in the post-earthquake reconstruction of the Noto Peninsula and also provides Starlink to self-defense forces, local governments, electric power companies, etc.
