“Tesla is a huge victory,” says Prime Minister of Brandenburg Dietmar Woidke

Brandenburg Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke continues to express support for Tesla in Germany as water protests continue. He emphasized that Giga Berlin is not the one to whom criticism can be expressed regarding water use. Woidke again said that Tesla does not plan to use additional water in production and will completely recycle industrial wastewater.

“We are well advised to use water sparingly. But Tesla is the wrong one to criticize in that,” Woidke told the German Press Agency. “The company doesn’t want to use any additional water in production and wants to fully recycle its industrial wastewater in the future.”

Tesla is a “huge win” and the company is a great model for others to follow, he said. “Tesla represents a huge benefit for the capital region and shows that we can start investing very quickly in the current conditions in Germany,” Woidke said. “Mr. Musk has made significant contributions to this investment, and for that we are grateful.”

Since late February, environmental activists have been protesting in the pine plantation near the Tesla factory against the planned expansion of the factory site for a freight station. In May, activists tried to storm the Tesla site. “My impression is that there has been a mobilization across Europe to unify the protest scene,” Woidke said.

While the protesters continue to protest, Tesla shows excellent results. Thus, car production in Giga Berlin requires 2.28 cubic meters of water per car. This is a third less than the industry average of 3.68 cubic meters of water. Tesla uses up to 100 percent process water.

The fact that freshwater consumption in Giga Berlin last year was less than 500 thousand cubic meters deserves special attention. This is significantly less than the agreed amount of water per year. For example, according to the Brandenburg Ministry of the Environment, the energy company Leag uses more than 44 million cubic meters per year to cool the Jenschwalde power plant.
