Tesla has officially begun shipping the China-made Megapacks. Production at the Shanghai Megafactory began last month.
“The first batch of Shanghai-made Tesla Megapacks, Tesla’s ultra-large commercial electrochemical energy storage systems, set sail today,” Tesla wrote on Weibo.
According to Tesla, a single Megapack can store about 3,900 kWh of electricity, equivalent to the battery capacity of 62 rear-wheel drive Model 3s. The first large batteries have been shipped to Australia to supply a market with high demand.
Production at the Shanghai Megafactory officially began on February 11, when Tesla’s vice president of external affairs Grace Tao announced on Weibo that the first China-made Megapacks had rolled off the assembly line and would be exported to Australia. After about 6 weeks, the Megafactory produced the required number of batteries to form the first delivery, which may indicate a fairly confident start and ramp-up of production.
The construction of the Shanghai Megafactory began on May 23, 2024. and was completed at the end of last year. The annual production capacity of the Megafactory will be 10,000 Megapacks, which is equal to an energy storage capacity of about 40 GWh.
